What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed appliance that replaces a missing tooth or teeth. Dental bridges get their name because they “bridge” gaps between teeth. They typically consist of false teeth held in place by crowns anchored to the teeth on either side of the gap.

The most common bridges are made of porcelain fused to metal, which provides a natural appearance, strength, and durability. However, there are several kinds of bridges, and Dr. Latif will go over all of your options to help you make the best choice.

Why would I need a dental bridge?

Dental bridges replace missing teeth. By replacing a missing tooth or teeth, you prevent your remaining natural teeth from shifting and moving out of alignment. Bridges also help you chew and speak properly, and they help preserve your smile and the shape of your face.

You may choose to get a bridge as your first option to replace missing teeth or you may upgrade to a bridge if a partial denture doesn’t meet your needs.

How are dental bridges installed?

If you decide on a dental bridge, Dr. Latif examines your remaining teeth to ensure they are strong and healthy enough to support a bridge. If you’re a good candidate for a bridge, Dr. Latif is usually able to install dental bridges over two appointments.

During the first appointment, Dr. Latif prepares the anchor teeth for crowns by gently removing a thin layer of tooth enamel. This makes room for the crown to sit flush against your other teeth. He also takes a mold or impression of the gap, which is used to manufacture the bridge to fit your mouth exactly. Dr. Latif fits you with a temporary bridge to protect your teeth while your permanent bridge is custom-made.

At your second appointment, Dr. Latif installs your permanent bridge. He checks the way the crowns fit and the way the false teeth fit into your gap before permanently bonding the bridge to the anchor teeth. Once the bridge is set, Dr. Latif polishes the bridge and crowns until they shine like natural teeth.
